As Uganda pursues industrialisation, private-sector expansion and job creation, indigenous enterprises have an important role to play in translating investment into economic opportunities. Among the business groups associated with this ambition is AYA Group, led by entrepreneur Mohammed Hamid.

With business interests spanning hospitality, food processing and other commercial activities, AYA Group represents an example of the entrepreneurial ambitions of Ugandan investors seeking to build enterprises across multiple sectors.

The group’s Pearl of Africa Hotel in Kampala has become one of its most visible projects, reflecting an ambition to establish a major luxury hospitality destination while contributing to Uganda’s capacity to accommodate business travellers, tourists and international visitors.

Beyond hospitality, the broader significance of indigenous enterprise lies in its potential to support employment, develop local supply chains, expand productive capacity and create opportunities for Ugandans.

    Building indigenous enterprise

Uganda’s economic transformation agenda places emphasis on industrialisation, value addition, private investment and the expansion of productive businesses.

The country’s Fourth National Development Plan, which began implementation in July 2025, identifies sustainable industrialisation, inclusive growth, employment and wealth creation among its priorities. The government has also highlighted manufacturing, tourism, agriculture, minerals and services as areas with potential to support economic expansion.

Within this context, domestic business groups can contribute by investing in productive assets, developing commercial services and building enterprises that connect different parts of the economy.

AYA Group’s business interests provide a basis for examining how indigenous investors approach opportunities across sectors, from hospitality to food-related businesses.

The long-term contribution of such enterprises depends on their ability to sustain operations, attract customers, develop competitive products and services, and meet their financial obligations.

Pearl of Africa Hotel: An investment in hospitality

One of AYA Group’s most prominent projects is the Pearl of Africa Hotel, located on Nakasero Hill in Kampala.

The property was developed as a luxury hotel offering accommodation, dining, conference facilities and event spaces. Its positioning reflects an ambition to serve both Uganda’s domestic hospitality market and international visitors seeking premium accommodation in the capital.

Hotels contribute to economic activity through their direct operations and their relationships with suppliers, service providers and other businesses.

These connections can include food and beverage suppliers, laundry services, transport operators, maintenance contractors, event organisers and other providers of goods and services.

Conference and event facilities can also support business meetings, professional networking and gatherings involving visitors from outside Uganda.

The hotel’s broader economic contribution would be best assessed through verified information on employment, local procurement, visitor numbers, conference activity and investment performance.

Hospitality as part of economic diversification

Tourism and hospitality form part of Uganda’s wider services economy. Accommodation providers support visitors attending conferences, conducting business, visiting family or exploring the country’s tourism attractions.

Kampala’s position as the country’s commercial centre creates demand for hotels that can accommodate corporate travellers, government delegations, investors and international organisations.

Investments in hospitality can therefore complement other economic activities by supporting business travel, events and tourism-related services.

However, the success of a major hotel depends on more than its physical infrastructure. Occupancy, operating costs, service quality, competition and the ability to generate sufficient revenue are important determinants of long-term performance.

For investors, the challenge is to convert capital investment into a commercially sustainable business that continues to serve customers and support economic activity.

The importance of value addition and local supply chains

Uganda’s industrialisation agenda places emphasis on retaining more economic value within the country through production, processing and the development of competitive enterprises.

Business groups operating across different sectors can create opportunities to connect suppliers, manufacturers, distributors and consumers.

In hospitality, local procurement can provide markets for agricultural producers, food processors and service providers. In manufacturing and food processing, domestic production can create opportunities for skilled and semi-skilled workers while supporting distribution and retail networks.

The extent to which AYA Group contributes to these outcomes should be established through evidence of its current operations, local sourcing arrangements, employment and production activities.

Such information would help illustrate the group’s actual contribution to Uganda’s economic development rather than relying solely on the scale or visibility of its investments.

Indigenous investors and Uganda’s development ambitions

Uganda’s economic transformation will require a combination of public infrastructure, private investment, productive enterprises and a skilled workforce.

The government has repeatedly emphasised the importance of stronger partnerships between the public and private sectors in accelerating industrialisation, expanding value chains and creating employment.

For indigenous investors, this environment presents opportunities to develop businesses that respond to domestic demand while exploring regional markets.

At the same time, major investments require sound financial management, transparent business practices and the ability to withstand changing market conditions.

AYA Group’s experience, including the development of the Pearl of Africa Hotel, provides a starting point for examining both the ambitions and the complexities associated with large-scale domestic investment.

A comprehensive assessment would consider not only the projects undertaken, but also their operating performance, employment impact, supplier relationships and long-term financial sustainability.

    Looking ahead

The contribution of indigenous enterprises to Uganda’s socio-economic transformation will ultimately be measured by what they deliver: sustainable businesses, productive investment, employment, competitive goods and services, and opportunities for other Ugandan enterprises to grow.

For AYA Group, its hospitality investment offers a visible example of the scale of ambition associated with developing a major property in Kampala.

The wider question is how investments across its business interests translate into measurable economic outcomes for workers, suppliers, customers and the communities in which its businesses operate.

As Uganda advances its industrialisation and wealth-creation agenda, evidence of those outcomes will be essential in assessing the role that AYA Group and other domestic enterprises can play in the country’s economic future.
