Khartoum, 16 October 2026 — Uganda’s Ambassador to Sudan, H.E. Ambassador Dr. Rashid Yahya Ssemuddu, has reaffirmed Uganda’s solidarity with the Sudanese people and called for unity among Ugandans living in Sudan during diplomatic and community engagements in Khartoum.

On Wednesday, 14 October, Ambassador Ssemuddu met H.E. Ambassador Khalid Alkheir, Director of the Africa Department at Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to discuss the longstanding fraternal relations between Uganda and Sudan and cooperation between the Embassy and the Ministry.

Ambassador Ssemuddu congratulated Ambassador Alkheir on assuming his responsibilities and expressed his commitment to working closely with him to strengthen bilateral relations.

He highlighted the return of Uganda’s Embassy to Khartoum, describing it as a practical expression of friendship and solidarity with Sudan. He noted that Uganda’s Embassy was the first African embassy, and the third internationally, to return to the capital following its liberation.

The Ambassador also expressed appreciation for the Sudanese authorities’ efforts to restore security and rehabilitate essential services.

The diplomatic engagement was followed on Friday, 16 October, by a working lunch at Bab Al Yemen Restaurant in Khartoum, bringing together Ugandans for a belated commemoration of Uganda’s 64th Independence Anniversary.

In his keynote remarks, Ambassador Ssemuddu honoured those whose courage and sacrifice secured Uganda’s independence and paid tribute to the leadership of H.E. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, acknowledging the Government’s continuing efforts to advance peace, development and regional cooperation.

Delivering Independence Anniversary greetings on behalf of the President, he encouraged Ugandans in Sudan to remain united, uphold their country’s good name and contribute to its development wherever they live.

The Ambassador commended the community’s resilience and mutual support amid the conflict in Sudan, expressing sympathy for families affected by displacement, loss and uncertainty.

He described the Embassy’s return to Khartoum as a message of solidarity and renewed engagement, reaffirming its responsibility to maintain communication with Ugandan citizens, provide consular assistance within its mandate and engage the relevant authorities on matters affecting their welfare.

Ambassador Ssemuddu urged Ugandans to register with the Embassy, update their contact details, safeguard their documents, follow official guidance and respect Sudan’s laws. He also encouraged community members to bring concerns relating to documentation, residence, employment, education, business and family welfare to the Embassy’s attention.

Emphasising unity across regional, religious and professional backgrounds, he called on the community to support students, vulnerable families, the sick and those facing isolation.

He further encouraged Ugandans to strengthen the longstanding ties between the two countries through education, trade, investment and professional cooperation.

The gathering brought together Ugandan community leaders and members of the Embassy team, including Defence Advisor Brigadier General Tingira Irumba Omero, First Secretary Mr. Joseph Barigye and Finance Attaché Mr. Adrian Felix Wendiga.

Ambassador Ssemuddu concluded by reaffirming his commitment to listening to the community’s concerns and working with its members, while offering prayers for Uganda and for peace, healing and stability in Sudan.
